Logical tab-stop columns

TabCairn offers a Windows workspace for discussing column-counting code with AI. Keep the tab-stop contract visible while you review suggested edits and distinguish logical positions from rendered width.

✳Count single-line logical columns using fixed tab stops and one column per other Unicode code point.

Review before applying

Compare actual behavior with the expected result. If a check fails, investigate it before applying more changes.

02

Connection

Base URL, credentials and a reachable server.

03

Project

Check consecutive tabs and an emoji, rejecting zero-width stops and line breaks rather than reporting terminal display width.

Agree on a text position before changing its calculation

TabCairn is a Windows coding workspace for software changes where the meaning of a text position matters. Open the relevant project and show how the position is produced and consumed. A conversation grounded in those files can distinguish an indexing decision from a display decision before the model suggests code.

Consider a request involving columns.py: explain how tabs advance a logical column, then review an edit to the caller that uses that number. Supply the tab width and a short line with mixed text and tabs. Keep the task tied to the application result, such as the column in a diagnostic, rather than treating the example as a complete editor layout system.

After inspecting the proposed changes, run project fixtures that include a tab at the start and after an ordinary character. Check invalid widths and embedded line breaks against the intended single-line contract. Where rendered placement matters, verify it separately in the consuming interface; logical columns do not by themselves establish visual alignment.

You choose the assisting model through a supported OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic endpoint, with credentials as needed. Abliterated AI model options depend on what that service offers. Their restrictions, context capacity and tools remain specific to the model and server, while your application’s position convention supplies the standard for review.

Text-position questions for a development session

Are logical columns the same as screen width?

Not necessarily. A logical counting rule does not measure font rendering or every writing system’s display width. Tell the model which value the caller needs, and keep any visual-layout requirement separate from the single-line column calculation in the example.

Why does the tab width belong in the task description?

It determines the next tab stop, so the same text can have different logical columns under different settings. Provide the application’s actual value and validation policy. Otherwise a suggested fix may be internally consistent yet disagree with the diagnostic consumer.

Should line breaks reset the column?

Only if the function’s contract supports multiple lines. The supplied example rejects line breaks. If you need a multiline calculation, describe the return value and caller changes explicitly rather than quietly expanding this helper’s purpose during a small correction.

How can I check a reported diagnostic position?

Start from the exact source line, its tab-width setting and the indexing convention used by the diagnostic. Trace the value into the consumer, then compare independently written expected positions. If the interface renders a marker, inspect that visible outcome as an additional check.
